BANGKOK (Kyodo) Trade negotiators from Thailand and Japan concluded their fifth round of free-trade negotiations here Thursday, which included the core elements of trade in goods and services and investment liberalization.

Ichiro Fujisaki, deputy foreign minister for economic affairs, told a news conference at the end of the three-day talks that steady progress had been made, but did not elaborate.

Fujisaki said the negotiations could be concluded next year and voiced hope that the Japan-Thailand Economic Partnership Agreement would be a high-level one, particularly regarding investment and services.

On liberalization of merchandise trade, Fujisaki repeated that both sides agreed to exclude only rice from the negotiations, while other "sensitive" goods, including chicken, sugar and tapioca, remain on the table.
