Early results of the free trade agreements (FTAs) Thailand made with China, Australia, New Zealand and India are quite worrying for the country. So, what went wrong?
WTO members this time around feel the need to conclude the round for the sake of global commerce. Some fear that should the round reach an impasse again, countries may shift towards bilateral FTAs, which fail to address the issues facing developing nations, such as farm subsidy cuts and unfair dumping allegations.

Since the FTA policy shares similar implications with industrial policies on the industrial structure adjustment, harmonization with other domestic policies is required. Trade liberalization and structural reforms are often thwarted by vested interests, and cooperation between FTA partners makes them easier to achieve.
FTAs is founded on the country's firm belief in the primacy of the multilateral trading system, and therefore is pursued in a manner that can complement the liberalization efforts on the multilateral level.
The United States cannot, and should not want to stop China from becoming prosperous. Rather, it, along with the democratic states in Asia, should set a benchmark of high-quality growth that embraces civil society.
Bilateral trade agreements that bestow preferential trading privileges upon their signatories could well breach the non-discrimination principle of the WTO and destroy value of the global trade.
