For the first two years of his reign, King Bhumibol concentrated on settling into his challenging new roles as monarch and husband. But his natural curiosity and energy, as well as his desire to follow through on his Coronation promise took the upper hand.

1952 was the pivotal year. In that year, he began experimenting with new agricultural techniques in the grounds of his Chitralada Villa, Dusit Palace. About the same time, he became engaged in a farm produce project just beyond the perimeter of his ancestral summer home in Hua Hin. Both would shape the way he would approach rural development.
