Foreign Ministry hosts a luncheon in honour of Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of ESCAP: On 20 June 2007, Mr. Sawanit Kongsiri, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, hosted a luncheon, on behalf of the Foreign Minister, in honour of Mr. Kim Hak-Su, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of ESCAP, on the occasion of the latter’s completion of his terms of assignment. The luncheon was participated by Ms. Gwi-Yeop Son, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative, the Director-General of Department of International Organizations and the Director of Thailand International Development Cooperation Agency.

On 20 June 2007, Mr. Sawanit Kongsiri, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, presided over the opening ceremony of BIMSTEC Exhibition: 10 Years of Friendship and Cooperation held from 20 to 24 June 2007 at TK Park, Central World Plaza. The event was well attended by ambassadors and representatives from BIMSTEC member countries.

Recently-appointed Greek ambassador paid a courtesy call on Foreign Ministry: On 15 June 2007, Mr. Ioannis Papadopoulos, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Hellenic Republic, paid a courtesy call on Mr. Nitya Pibulsonggram, Foreign Minister, on the occasion of the assumption of his new assignment to Thailand. Mr. Papadopoulos had an audience with His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn to present his letter of accreditation on 26 February 2007 and paid a courtesy call on the Prime Minister of Thailand on 12 June 2007. |

Thailand was pleased by cooperative friendship handed over to the country by our Swedish friend: On the completion of his terms of assignment in Thailand, Ambassador Jonas HafstrÖm promised to continue promoting bilateral relationships between Thailand and Sweden in all aspects. He also expressed his clear understanding on the situation in Thailand and promised to convey the facts about situations in Thailand to the Swedish government and others. |

On 14 June 2007, Mr. Nitya Pibulsonggram, Minister of Foreign Affairs, presided over the opening ceremony of an international conference titled “Foreign Ministries: Adaptation to a Changing World” held at Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel. The conference was co-hosted by the Thai Foreign Ministry and the DiploFoundation. The event was well attended by more than 100 scholars and representatives from 46 countries around the world. |

Thai-UN Confirm their Commitment for Cooperation: On 14 June 2007 Ms. Gwi-Yeop Son, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative, paid a courtesy call on Mr. Nitya Pibulsonggram, Foreign Minister, at the Foreign Ministry to present her letter of accreditation from Mr. Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations. Mr. Nitya welcomed and congratulated Ms. Gwi-Yeop Son on her new assignment. He also expressed his appreciation for a long and cordial relationship between Thailand and the UN and stressed the 50-year consistent policies of the Royal Thai Government with regards to its cooperation with the UN.

Thailand hosted the 6th Joint Commission (JC) for Bilateral Cooperation between Thailand and Indonesia at the Ministry of Foriegn Affairs : to foster bilateral relations and coopertions. On 11 June 2007 Mr. Nitya Pibulsonggram, Foreign Minister, and Dr. Hassan Wirajuda, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia, co-chaired the 6th Joint Commission (JC) for Bilateral Cooperation between Thailand and Indonesia.
Prior to the Meeting, Mr. Nitya had bilateral talks with Dr. Wirajuda at Bua Kaew Room, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to discuss issues which the two countries would like to pursue during this JC Meeting. During the talks, both ministers also exchanged views regarding the situation in the South of Thailand which Dr. Hassan paid special attention on the issue as part of the ASEAN family. |

The 6th Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting : On 5 June 2007, Foreign Minister Nitya Pibulsonggram attended the Opening Ceremony of the 6th Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held in Seoul, South Korea. Following the Welcoming Remarks by Mr. Song Min-soon, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of South Korea, and the Opening Statement by Mr. Han Duck-soo, Prime Minister of South Korea, Foreign Minister Nitya delivered a congratulatory address on behalf of the other Heads of Delegation. He then joined the other Heads of Delegation in touring the information technology (IT) exhibition, which highlighted the efforts of South Korea, the host of this ACD 6 Meeting, to bridge the digital divide between ACD members. Thailand, as ACD Coordinator, also unveiled the official ACD website at www.acddialogue.com, which apart from presenting information about ACD, would also serve as a channel for coordination between ACD members. |

Foreign Minister Nitya Pibulsonggram attended the 6th Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held in Seoul, South Korea. On the first day of the Meeting, Foreign Minister Nitya held bilateral discussions with the Foreign Ministers of South Korea, Kuwait, Russia and Bahrain. He also joined the other ministers from ACD member countries in paying a courtesy call on H.E. Mr. Roh Moo-hyun, President of the Republic of Korea, and attending the welcome dinner hosted by President Roh for the ministerial delegates. |

On 7 June 2007, Mr. Surapon Petch-Vra, Thai Consul-General to Kota Bharu, Malaysia and Major General Dusit Kruayai, Deputy Director of Neighbour Countries Coordination Center, Royal Thai Army led 18 volunteer Thai teaching teachers, who are on a study tour and training for Thai language in Thailand, to pay a courtesy call on Mr. Virasakdi Futakul, Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs. These volunteer teachers are Malaysians with Thai ethnicity. They give lessons about Thai language at schools located in 13 Thai temples located in Kelantan, Malaysia. |

Thai white wine wins the second award from the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Wine & Beverage Competition: Foreign Minister, presents an award and a certificate from the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Wine & Beverage Competition 2007 during the 2/2007 dinner reception of APEC Senior Officials Meeting (SOM) in Adelaide, Australia, to a representative of B.B. Groups Trading Company Limited who distributed Sawasdee Khao Yai Chenin Blanc 2005 from Khao Yai Winery. Sawasdee Khao Yai Chenin Blanc 2005, the only wine from Southeast Asia to win any prize in this event, receives the second price in the White Wine category from this competition.

On 5 June 2007, Mr. Virasakdi Futrakul, Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Charan Pakdithanakul, Permanent Secretary for Justice, gave a briefing to Diplomatic Corps and International Organizations on the ruling of Constitutional Tribunal on election fraud at the Foreign Ministry. The event was attended by representatives from 39 countries (17 of which were heads of mission) and 12 representatives from Bangkok-based international organizations. |

ASEM members reaffirmed readiness to further relations with Thailand: On the second and final day of the 8th ASEM Foreign Ministers Meeting in Hamburg, Germany, Foreign Minister Nitya Pibulsonggram attended both the Plenary Session and Working Lunch, during which he explained the political progress in Thailand and expressed his views on the issue of counter-terrorism. He then attended the Group Photo Session along with foreign ministers from other ASEM member countries. Foreign Minister Nitya also held bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the ASEM FMM with Swedish Foreign Minister Carld Bildt, Spanish Secretary of State for the European Union Alberto Navarro Gonzalez, Austrian Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik and United Kingdom Minister of State for Asia Ian McCartney. |

Thailand held bilateral talks with other ASEM members in Germany: On the sidelines of the 8th ASEM Foreign Ministers Meeting in Hamburg, Germany, Mr. George Yeo, Foreign Minister of Singapore, called on Foreign Minister Nitya Pibulsonggram on 28 May 2007. The Singapore side raised the issue of developments on the ASEAN Charter and expressed the desire for smooth relations between the two countries. Foreign Minister Nitya also met with Dr. Manuel Lobo Antunes, Deputy Foreign Minister of Portugal, and exchanged views on the latest political developments in Thailand. Dr. Kinga Goncz, Foreign Minister of Hungary, later met with Foreign Minister Nitya and was also informed of the latest political developments in Thailand. The two sides agreed to take more advantage of existing cooperation mechanisms, such as between the Foreign Ministries and within the framework of the Joint Commission on Economic, Trade and Technical Cooperation, to enhance exchanges and interactions between the two countries. |

Thailand China bilateral discussions in Hamburg: Foreign Minister Nitya Pibulsonggram arrived in Hamburg, Germany, to attend the 8th ASEM Foreign Ministers Meeting during 28-29 May 2007. On the sidelines of the first day of the meeting, Foreign Minister Nitya held bilateral talks with Mr. Yang Jieshi, Foreign Minister of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). It is the first meeting between the two since Mr. Yang’s assumption of office in April 2007. On this occasion, Mr. Yang expressed his appreciation for the close and cordial relationship between the two countries and affirmed his determination to further promote bilateral cooperation between Thailand and China. Mr. Yang also welcomed Prime Minister Surayudh’s official visit to China on 28-29 May 2007. |

The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs paid an official visit to the Republic of Uzbekistan during 22-24 May 2007. The purpose of the visit was to strengthen bilateral ties and explore avenues for future bilateral cooperation between Thailand and Uzbekistan, such as investment in the industrial sector, cooperation between the respective Foreign Ministries, technical cooperation and cooperation on narcotics suppression. During the visit, the two sides signed the Agreement on Cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand, which should provide an important foundation for future interactions and cooperation between the two countries. |

US Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill reiterated Thailand always good friend, good partner and important ally and supported Thailand path of returning to democracy: Mr. Hill answered media enquiries. First of all, he mentioned that both sides have a good discussion on many issues of mutual interests. On bilateral relations, Mr. Hill said that Thailand has always been a very good friend, a very good partner and an important treaty ally of US. The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs highlighted Thailand’s efforts in the protection and the promotion of the rights of the child : Deputy Foreign Minister attended the 9th Ministerial Meeting of the Human Security Network (HSN) in Ljubljana, Slovenia, which was held during 17 - 18 May 2007. The meeting focused mainly on violence against children, children in armed conflict, past and future activities of the HSN, and the upcoming chairmanship of Greece. During the meeting, Deputy Foreign Minister not only addressed Thailand’s efforts in the protection and the promotion of the rights of the child but also reported on Thailand’s past activities in promoting human security at the regional and global level.
