On 9 February 2005 Dr. Surakiart Sathirathai, Foreign Minister of Thailand led a delegation on an official visit to Banda Aceh, Indonesia.
Dr. Surakiart was welcomed by Mr. Alwi Shihab, Coordinating Minister for Social Welfare, at Banda Aceh airport. After the welcoming ceremony, Dr. Surakiart donated relief supplies comprising blankets, clothes and drinking water, as a gesture of goodwill and concern from the government of Thailand and Thai people to assist the people as they recover from the aftermath of the Tsunami disaster.

Dr. Surakiart held a bilateral discussion with Mr. Shihab who briefed him
on the relief efforts undertaken by the Indonesian government for the disaster affected people of Indonesia in Banda Aceh. In this regard, Dr. Surakiart offered to the Indonesian Government medium and long term technical assistances on the environmental rehabilitation along the affected coastal areas. He also offered technical assistance in the field of agriculture as well as fishery.
After the briefing, Dr. Surakiart took a helicopter observation tour of the Tsunami affected area in Banda Aceh.
Before leaving Banda Aceh, Dr. Surakiart also held discussion with Mr. Joel Boutroue, United Nations Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator for Sumatra on the medium and long term rehabilitation and reconstruction projects especially the building of schools for students in the Tsunami affected area where more than 600 schools were destroyed. Mr. Boutroue also highlighted technical assistance from Thailand in the field of vocational and agriculture training courses, which he believed that Thailand was in the position to render its support.
