On 26 December, 2005, Dr. Kantathi Suphamongkhon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, attended the ceremonies that the Thai Government had organized to mark the anniversary of the 26 December 2004 tsunami, to honour and pay homage to the deceased, to recognize the heroic and humane spirit of those who selflessly helped their fellow humans during and after the tragic event, and to express thanks for help and assistance in all forms that Thailand had received.
In the afternoon, Dr. Kantathi and the other members of the Cabinet joined the foundation stone laying ceremony for the tsunami monument, with Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra presiding over the ceremony. The monument is to be built at Haad Lek Beach, Phang-Nga province.
In the evening, HRH Princess Ubol Ratana presided over the Commemorative Ceremony at Bang-Niang Beach, Phang-Nga province. The Prime Minister, the Foreign Minister and other Cabinet members, together with foreign dignitaries, foreign relatives of the deceased invited by the Thai Government, diplomats, and approximately 12,000 Thai people also joined the Ceremony. |
