ADB ready to participate in the development of the Asian Bond market within the Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD)

On 23 February 2006, Dr. Virachai Virameteekul,Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs welcomed Mr. Liqun Jin, Vice president of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) who is on a two-day visit to Thailand between 23-24 February 2006 to meet with the public and private sectors in Thailand, including officials at the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Finance, EXIM Bank and other related agencies. The two discussed ADB?s role in the region within the framework of GMS, ACMECS and ACD.

During the discussion, Mr. Jin reiterated ADB?s plan to send a specialist to attend the upcoming high-level seminar on the Asian Bond market ?Enhancing Financial Cooperation Through Asian Bond Market Development?, the result of which would be reported to the ACD Finance Ministers Meeting to be hosted by Thailand in June 2006 and which would also be attended by an expert from the ADB. Dr. Virachai conveyed his appreciation for the ADB?s active role in being the driving force of the Asian Bond Market in the ACD framework. At the same time, Mr. Jin praised Thailand?s role in the development of the region

For Thailand?s part, Dr. Virachai expressed his appreciation for the invaluable contributions the ADB made through the years to the development of Southeast Asia and urged the ADB to intensify its involvement within the GMS and ACMECS frameworks in particular in creating a more conducive investment atmosphere in the areas of infrastructure development, mass transit system, water treatment, hydropower and sustainable energy. In this connection, Dr. Virachai stressed the country?s current ?energy diplomacy? which seek to diversify its energy needs from different regions. Moreover, he informed Mr. Jin of the ?Partnership for Development? initiative of the government where Thailand will be seeking project proposals and joint ventures with other countries and partners, both public and private.
