Gabon ready to import more Thai rice and air-conditioners

During his recent visit to Thailand, the President of Gabon discussed with Thai Foreign Minister areas of cooperation including energy, public health and trade.

On 29 April 2006, Dr. Kantathi Suphamongkhon, Foreign Minister, paid a courtesy call on Mr. Omar Bongo Ondimba, President of Gabon, at the Peninsula Hotel. During the meeting, both sides expressed the desire to see more cooperation between Thailand and Gabon especially in the areas of energy, trade, agriculture, public health such as AIDS, malaria and the bird flu. The President of Gabon reiterated that Gabon?s private sector was particularly interested in imports from Thailand including air-conditioners, Thai rice and orchids. Dr. Kantathi pledged to encourage Thai private sector to export air-conditioners to Gabon as well as discuss the possibility of joint investment with the Gabonese side to produce air-conditioners in Gabon to be exported to the EU where Gabon could enjoy tax privileges. Moreover, Gabon banks were also keen to set up a partnership with Thai banks to discuss banking cooperation.

Dr. Kantathi also briefed the President of Gabon on Thailand?s political situation and the government?s policies in various fields including poverty eradication, OTOP and crop-substitution.

Other issues discussed included the candidature of Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Surakiart Sathirathai for the position of United Nations Secretary-General to which Gabon responded positively and the drafting of agreement to exchange prisoners between the two countries.

Mr. Omar Bongo Ondimba, President of Gabon was on a private visit to Thailand as guest of the Thai government during 28-30 April 2006 as part of his tour of the region, including the Arab Emirates, China and India.
