Foreign Minister pledges continued support for UN

Today (20 October 2006), Mr. Nitya Pibulsonggram, Minister of Foreign Affairs, on behalf of the Prime Minister, delivered a speech on the occasion of the United Nations Day 2006 (on 24 October) at the United Nations Conference Centre, ESCAP Hall, Bangkok.


  


During his address, the Foreign Minister reiterated the Prime Minister?s statement on 12 October 2006 that Thailand?s commitment to supporting the United Nations is steadfast and that Thailand will continue to work in close partnership with the UN. 


  


In marking the UN Day, Mr.Nitya also stressed the need for a time of reflection in particular with the marked rise in both traditional and non-traditional threats. Thus, he emphasized the need to make the UN more relevant, by way of UN reform and revitalization as well as meeting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)


 


Furthermore, he mentioned the three pillars of the UN: human rights, development and peace and security, to which Thailand gives priority.


                    


Foreign Minister Nitya also took this opportunity to pay tribute to Secretary-General Kofi Annan in recognition of his many years of service and leadership at the UN and his legacy on reform, as well as assured the incoming Secretary-General, Foreign Minister Ban Ki-moon of the Republic of Korea, of Thailand?s support and cooperation


  


In addition to the Foreign Minister?s speech, a video message of Mr. Kofi Annan, Secretary-General of the UN was televised, followed by a speech by Mr. Kim Hak-Su, Under-Secretary General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of UNESCAP, delivered by Ms. Elizabeth Fong, Regional Manager of UNDP Regional Centre in Bangkok, and Dr. Manaspas Xuto, President of the United Nations Association of Thailand (UNAT).



 


Other activities for the observance of the UN Day include the exhibition on ?Millennium Development Goals? and ?His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej?s Development Work? which was opened by the Foreign Minister.  Furthermore, a cartoon book ?Our United Nations? in English and Thai was also launched.
