|
On 25 October 2006, Mr. Katsuhito Asano, Senior Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, paid a courtesy call on Mr. Nitya Pibulsonggram, Minister of Foreign Affairs, at the Foreign Ministry. On this occasion, both sides exchanged views on the political situation in Thailand. The Thai Foreign Minister emphasized that Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont and the government have reiterated their commitment to steer Thailand towards the restoration of democracy in accordance with the related procedures and in the shortest possible time frame. He took this opportunity to request Japan to help explain these facts to other countries. Mr. Asano said that his visit to Thailand this time helped him to gain better understanding of situation. He also expressed confidence in the commitment of the Thai government. Japan would help explain the facts about political situation of Thailand to other countries. He hoped that the political situation in Thailand would be further improved so that the martial law could be lifted at the earliest opportunity.
Both sides agreed that the cooperation between Thailand and Japan which covers various aspects is important and should be continued. The signing of Japan-Thailand Economic Partnership Agreement (JTEPA) depends on readiness of the two sides. Mr. Asano expressed his sympathy to the current flood in Thailand and asked the Thai government whether there is anything Japan can do. Foreign Minister Nitya thanked the Senior Vice Foreign Minister of Japan and told him that the flood problem is a matter of great concern of the Thai government, and that it was now in the process of providing assistance to the affected people.
Both sides also discussed the projects to celebrate the 120th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand-Japan to be held in 2007. The visit of the Emperor and Empress of Japan to Thailand in June this year to participate in the 60th Anniversary Celebrations of H.M. the King?s Accession to the Throne reflected such close and cordial relations between the two countries.
Afterwards, Mr. Asano had a meeting with Deputy Foreign Minister Sawanit Kongsiri. The Thai Deputy Foreign Minister also hosted a luncheon in honour of the Senior Vice Foreign Minister of Japan. |
