Ambassador Hans Dannenberg Castellanos, the Dominican Republic's envoy to Thailand, with residence in New Delhi, pays a courtesy call on Deputy Foreign Minister Sawanit Kongsiri, on the occasion of the assumption on his assignment.

On Tuesday, 28 August 2007, Ambassador Hans Dannenberg Castellanos, the Dominican Republic's envoy to Thailand, with residence in New Delhi, called on Deputy Foreign Minister Sawanit Kongsiri, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to present the credential to Thailand. 


 


Deputy Foreign Minister Sawanit expressed his warm welcome to Ambassador Hans Dannenberg Castellanos and congratulated him on the assumption of his assignment on 22 March 2007.  Ambassador Hans Dannenberg Castellanos is the first Dominican Republic’s ambassador to Thailand (with residence in New Delhi).  On this occasion, Deputy Foreign Minister Sawanit articulated his intention to promote bilateral ties and to expand cooperation between the two countries, since there are various potential fields of cooperation that Thailand and the Dominican Republic can collaborate.    


 


Thailand and the Dominican Republic (DR) established their diplomatic relations on 18 September 1967.  Since then, the DR has become a significant market for exports and investment for Thailand.  It is the biggest economy among the Caribbean countries, and it is among one of the economies with high rate growth in Latin American states.  The DR is the 12th Thailand’s economic partner in Latin America.  Trade volume between Thailand and the DR reached 52.3 million USD in 2006, of which 46.31 million USD were trade surplus of the Thai side.  Major exporting products of Thailand are rice, canned-seafood, pickup trucks, etc.  The industrial sectors of the DR that Thailand has potentials include tourism, spa, hotels, restaurants, shrimp-farming, and orchid cultivation.
