FM presents diplomatic passport to tennis champ “Nong Nok”

July 30, 2009

On 29 July 2009, Mr. Kasit Piromya, Minister of Foreign Affairs, presided over a ceremony at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to present a diplomatic passport to Miss Noppawan Lertcheewakarn, or “Nong Nok”, the young Thai tennis player who won the 2009 Wimbledon ladies junior championship title in both singles and doubles events.
The diplomatic passport will facilitate Miss Noppawan’s travel to tennis competitions in 44 countries which have visa-exemption agreements for Thai diplomatic passport holders, such as Germany, Austria, Belgium, Italy, Japan, Russia, Netherlands, etc.
The Foreign Ministry occasionally issues diplomatic passports to persons who make significant contributions to Thailand or bring fame to the country. In the past, the Foreign Ministry has issued such passports to Thai athletes who won international competitions such as boxer Manas Boonjamnong, weightlifter Udomporn Polsak, tae kwon do champ Yaowapa Boorapolchai, golfer Thongchai Jaidee and tennis player Paradorn Srichaphan.
Miss Noppawan distinguished herself by winning junior titles at the 2009 Wimbledon and other Grand Slam tournaments such as the ladies’ doubles of 2008 U.S. Open and 2009 French Open.
