Epic Movie to Elevate Bilateral Relations between Thailand and Iran to a New Height: On 12 May 2008, Ambassador Kriangsak Kittichaisaree welcomed a 6-person delegation from the Iranian film industry led by Mr. Mohammad A. Ghavam, a member of the Board of Directors and Treasurer of the Farabi Cinema Foundation. The meeting discussed a US$10-15 million movie project on the roles of Persians in the Royal Court of the Ayudhya Kingdom and the start of diplomatic relations between Siam and Persia over 400 years ago.

The movie will be based on a filmscript entitled “The Story of Ayudhya: Sheikh Ahmad Qomi Chao Phya Boworn Rajanayok”.
Sheikh Ahmad Qomi and his relatives were the ancestors of the Bunnag family and several other nationally prominent families in present-day Thailand. His time in Siam spanned six reigns of Siamese Kings: King Naresuan the Great, King Aekatossaros, King Sri Saowapak, King Songtham, King Prasartthong, and King Narai the Great. (The Sheikh’s life in Siam spanned nine reigns if one includes the short reigns of the other three Kings that lasted from merely 3 days to 2 months.) These were turbulent times for 17th century Siam. Great European countries were exerting influence and control over the Siamese nation, while the Royal Court itself was often caught in power struggles among rival princes. Persians and their descendants working in the Royal Court were part of these happenings, and their power fight with Constantine Phaulkon during the reign of King Narai the Great was depicted in John Hoskin’s historical novel Falcon at the Court of Siam as well as in Axel Aylwen’s best-selling historical trilogy The Falcon of Siam, The Falcon Takes Wing and The Falcon’s Last Flight.
The Iranian film makers have visited the film sets and locations in Thailand’s Karnjanaburi Province used in the filming of the epic Thai movies Suriyothai and Somdej Phra Naresuan Maharaj and have found that these sets and locations can be adapted for the filming of The Story of Ayudhya. A joint venture with a Thai side is being sought. Parts of the fimscript may be used to make a TV drama series to be shown on a Thai TV channel at peak time, and the TV drama series’ commercial success will be followed by a full-length feature film.
The movie is expected to elevate bilateral relations between Thailand and Iran to a new height after both the Thai and the Iranian peoples have learned how close they are and how much Persians and their descendants have contributed to Siam.
