The Royal Thai Embassy in Tehran, in collaboration with the Office of Export
Promotion of Thailand in Iran, took part in the Iran Food and Hospitality Fair 2008 at the Tehran International Permanent Fairground, Tehran, on 25-28 May 2008 to promote Thai products and tourism in Thailand. There were 26 countries and 611 companies (including 9 Thai companies) from within and outside Iran participating in the event which attracted more than 60,000 visitors. Thailand was one of the 4 countries that had their own pavilions.
The Embassy brought samples of Thai food and fresh fruits and desserts from Thailand for Iranians to taste; namely, green curry chicken, pineapple fried rice, prawn tom yam, sticky rice, grilled chicken, Thai papaya salad, red curry with pineapple and shrimp, Med Kahnoon, Luk Chup, coconut jelly, red sticky rice, white sweet sticky rice, mango, rambutan, mangosteen and pineapple. Each day, more than 400 people eagerly waited in front of the Thai Embassy’s booth just to have a chance to taste the Thai delicacies. The activities were part of the Royal Thai Government’s policy to promote Thailand as the “Kitchen of the World” and promote Thai food products abroad. There was also fruit and vegetable carving demonstration throughout the event to show to Iranians the uniqueness of Thai culture and rich tradition from the old royal court of Siam. In addition, people who visited the Embassy’s booth received Farsi or English travel brochures as well as enjoyed watching a video programme on Thailand’s tourist attractions.
In 2007, approximately more than 60,000 Iranians visited Thailand. In the first 4 months of this year, the number increased by 38 per cent compared with that of the same period in 2007.
