Welcome to Young Ambassador of Virtue
Special Project : Young Ambassador of Virtue

  1.   "Young Ambassador of Virtue" is a project initiated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to celebrate His Majesty the King's 6th cycle Birthday Anniversary. Recognizing the importance of youth as the nation's future and the significance of inculcating moral conscience in the young generation, the Ministry designed this project on the following principles:

    1.1   His Majesty the King's guidance on how to be a good, righteous and virtuous person as reflected in His addresses on various occasions;

    1.2   Policy set forth in the 8th National Economic and Social Development Plan (1997-2001) which emphasizes the importance of human development as Thailand's main goal; and

    1.3   ASEAN Vision 2020, shared by ASEAN member states in 1997, which gives importance to children, youth, women and the elderly, and the creation and realization of ASEAN "caring and civil societies."

    2.   Project Committee
    The Project Committee comprises the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Office of the National Primary Education Commission-the Ministry of Education, and the National Economic and Social Development Board. A total of 76 primary schools nationwide representing each province have been selected by the Project Committee to participate in the "Young Ambassador of Virtue" project.
    3.   Guidelines for Participating SchoolsThe selected schools will submit proposals on extra-curricular activities in accordance with the following guidelines:

    3.1 Activities with a focus on human development, particularly on cultivating ethics and moral standards among students;

    3.2 Activities adopting themes and concepts embedded in His Majesty the King's addresses as guidelines to enhance ethics and virtuous values among students;

    3.3 Pragmatic and appropriate activities for students at the primary school level; and

    3.4 Activities emphasizing prudent use of resources.

    The participating schools whose activities are deemed outstanding by the Project Committee will consequently become models for other primary schools nation-wide (approximately 30,000 schools).

    4.   Implementation
    The project is scheduled in two phases following the Thai academic school year with the launch date set on December 5th 1999 to mark His Majesty the King's 72nd Birthday Anniversary:
    4.1 Phase 1 December 5th 1999 to March 2000
    4.2 Phase 2 May 2000 to March 2001

    5.   Embassies'/Consulate-Generals' Participation
    As part of a key contribution to the successful implementation of the project, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has invited the Embassies and Consulate-Generals based in Thailand to join the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the celebration of this auspicious occasion by associating themselves as "Friends of the Young Ambassadors of Virtue".

    6.   Roles of the "Friends"
    Role of the "Friends" may vary in accordance with the extent of interest in this human resource development scheme and the imagination which respective Embassies and Consulate/Generals may have. It may take the following forms:
    6.1 Moral Support
    Moral encouragement can be the simplest form of support. It may merely be the dispatch of letters and occasional visits to the schools.
    6.2 Gifts/Mementos
    "Friends" may contribute gifts or mementos of any kind to students of the participating schools.
    6.3 Assistance
    "Friends" may seek from any bodies/entities in their countries that may wish to offer any type of assistance (books, magazines, computer hardware/software, scholarships, funds etc.) to the school and students participating in this project.
    6.4 Other form of participation
    (open-ended)

    With such participation in the "Young Ambassador of Virtue" project, the "Friends" will be instrumental to a process of human resources development in Thailand. Not only will their roles help broaden the minds and widen the horizons of Thai primary schools' students, they will contribute constructively to the nurturing of a new generation of Thais who are expected to be more rounded and better prepared for the challenges of the future. A "Friend" may therefore choose to partner with (adopt) one school from the list of the 76 participating schools.
    The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will be pleased to initially coordinate and facilitate correspondence or contact between schools and their "Friends" and will therefore be happy to render all possible cooperation and assistance to this growing relationship forged under this commemorative project.
