Prime Minister of Thailand Proposed Areas of Cooperation for Regional Economic Recovery and Sustainable Development in the 2nd ASEAN-Australia Biennial Summit

The Prime Minister of Thailand proposed two areas of cooperation for regional economic recovery and laying down the foundation for sustainable development, namely, Digital Economy and Bio-Circular-Green Economy in the 2nd ASEAN-Australia Biennial Summit.
 
On 14 November 2020, H.E. General Prayut Chan-o-cha, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand, attended the 2nd ASEAN-Australia Biennial Summit. The Meeting was attended by ASEAN Leaders and the Honourable Scott Morrison, Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Australia. The Meeting discussed the overall relationship between ASEAN and Australia as well as exchanged views on the COVID-19 situation and possible areas of cooperation for economic recovery. The Prime Minister of Thailand welcomed the annual ASEAN-Australia Summit, which will be held from next year onwards. This will provide an opportunity to develop the cooperation in various areas.
 
Prime Minister Prayut proposed two areas of cooperation for the recovery and lay down the foundation for sustainable development, including (1) Digital Economy and (2) Bio-Circular-Green Economy (BCG). He proposed the cooperation of BCG between ASEAN and Australia could be promoted through the ASEAN Centre for Sustainable Development Studies and Dialogue (ACSDSD), which was established in Bangkok. In addition, the Prime Minister proposed to fully utilise the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP) as a way forward. Australia is the first country that expressed and confirmed its support to AOIP.
 
The Meeting discussed development of vaccines that are safe, effective, and accessible to all through exchanging of information on vaccine development among health experts in ASEAN and Australia. The ASEAN Member States expressed their appreciation to Australia for its assistance to support their efforts to combat with COVID-19, especially with the financial contribution of AUD 21 million to the ASEAN Centre for Public Health Emergencies and Emerging Diseases (ACPHEED) and AUD 1 million to COVID-19 ASEAN Response Fund.
 
The Prime Minister of Australia also announced in the meeting that the Australian Government will provide AUD 232 million to support economic integration in ASEAN and development in the Mekong.
 
In this occasion, the Meeting adopted the Joint Statement of the Second ASEAN-Australia Biennial Summit: A Strong Partnership for Recovery.
