On 20 December 2021, H.E. Ms. Arunrung Phothong Humphreys, Ambassador attached to the Ministry and Thailand’s Mekong SOM Leader, attended the Mekong - Japan Director General-level meeting via video conference chaired by H.E. Mr. Takehiro Kano, Director-General of the Department of Southeast and Southwest Asian Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.

The Mekong - Japan Director General-level meeting was constructive, and during the meeting, the Mekong SOM leaders and Director-General Kano followed up on the outcomes of the 14th Mekong - Japan Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and preparation for the Mekong - Japan Summit in 2022. The meeting also discussed the current situation in the Mekong sub-region, Japan’s proactive role as a Development Partner of the Ayeyawady - Chao Phraya - Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS) and the future direction of the Mekong - Japan Cooperation. They agreed to step up collaboration on the COVID-19 responses, quality infrastructure development, hardware and software connectivity, economic recovery, support for MSMEs, disaster relief and management, digitalisation, human resource development and environmental issues, such as marine plastic waste and climate change.

Mekong - Japan Cooperation (MJ) was established in 2008, comprising five Mekong countries and Japan. Currently guided by the Tokyo Strategy 2018, MJ has three main pillars, namely (1) Vibrant and Effective Connectivity (2) People-Centred Society and (3) Realisation of a Green Mekong.
