On 9 July 2025, Mr. Maris Sangiampongsa, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, attended the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM) held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The meeting was attended by foreign ministers from ASEAN Member States and Timor-Leste.
During the Plenary Session, the Ministers reviewed progress on key issues, including Timor-Leste’s full membership into ASEAN in October 2025, preparations for the 47th ASEAN Summit, and ASEAN’s external relations. The meeting also reaffirmed ASEAN’s commitment to preserving its unity and centrality, strengthening regional economic resilience, and exploring ways to enhance intra-ASEAN trade and investment. Thailand also highlighted the issue of online scams, which is a pressing concern in the region.
During the Retreat Session, the Ministers discussed the situation in Myanmar and the progress of the implementation of the Five-Point Consensus. They also exchanged views on other important regional and international issues, including the situation in the Middle East and on the Korean Peninsula.
Also at the meeting, the Thai Foreign Minister underscored the importance of closer cooperation to address regional threats, such as human security challenges, cybercrime and online scam, as well as strengthened economic cooperation, including the green and digital economies. These efforts are aimed at navigating global volatility and maintaining peace and stability in the region, in line with the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP).
In addition, the Thai Minister also attended the signing ceremony of the Instrument of Accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) by Algeria and Uruguay, held on the sidelines of the 58th AMM. The TAC promotes principles of peace and regional stability and is open to non-ASEAN countries wishing to enhance their relations with ASEAN. To date, 57 countries have acceded to the TAC, with Algeria and Uruguay becoming the 56th and 57th countries to join.
