UN holds workshop on the implementation of the UN Programme of Action
to Prevent, Combat and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All Its Aspect
On 11 – 13 December 2012, The UN Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific (UNRCPD) in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Security Council with the support of the Government of Germany held The UNRCPD workshop on the implementation of the UN Programme of Action to Prevent, Combat and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All Its Aspects (UN PoA): Bulding Capacity in Small Arms and Light Weapons.
The workshop was joined by experienced officials from the Royal Thai Police, Ministry of Interior, Royal Thai Customs and Airport Authority of Thailand joined experts from UN Office of Disarmament Affairs (UNODA), Government of Germany and Small Arms Survey in sharing best practices on the implementation of the UN PoA. The workshop was well participated by representatives from 19 Thai agencies whose work relate to the control of the illicit trade of small arms and light weapons in Thailand.
The UN PoA is a non-legally binding agreement adopted by member states at the UN General Assembly in 2001 after negotiations at the UN Conference on the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All Its Aspects earlier that year. It provides a programme of action which enables countries to prevent the illicit trade of small arms and light weapons more effectively. In Thailand, the national mechanism to oversee the implementation of the UN PoA is the Small Arms and Light Weapons Sub-committee chaired by the National Security Council.
