“Songkran” (Thai New Year) Festival Reception

On 20 April 2018, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand played part in the promotion of Thai cultural heritage and Songkran tradition by organizing “Songkran” (Thai New Year) Festival Reception for ambassadors and heads of international organizations based in Thailand and their spouses at Vithes Samosorn Hall, with H.E. Mr. Thani Thongphakdi, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs of Thailand, as the host of the event. A total of approximately 150 guests and the Ministry’s executives attended the event.
In the reception, the Ministry brought some of the highlights of Songkran Festival such as the sand-pagoda and Thai performances and demonstrations. With the courtesy of Rajamangala University of Technology Krungthep, South Bangkok Campus, the making of floral garlands, floral-scented water, and traditional Thai desserts was introduced to the guests. In addition, the schools under the Young Ambassador of Virtue Foundation network, namely Thanyasitthisin School, Pathumthani Province, and Phra Tamnak Suankularb Mahamongkol School, Nakhon Pathom Province, created a colorful atmosphere with the demonstration of traditional Thai children’s games. The Community Development Department, Ministry of Interior, also contributed with the showcase of 5-star One Tambon One Product (OTOP) handicrafts, Phu Thai Praewa Silk from Ban Pon Village, Kalasin Province, Zipp Fabergé Eggs, Samut Prakan Province, Silver by Doi Silver, Nan Province, and Tung Sai Thong Thai Herb, Phichit Province. Also presented, are a variety of performances, including “Hun Kon” or human puppet show by Kai Kaew Karn Lakorn troupe, performances by the winners of the Creative Thai Classical Dance Contest organized by the Thailand Foundation, namely the “Siam Mahorasop” dance by Klom Mahorasop troupe and the “Whispered Love" dance by Ban Somdej troupe, as well as music by “Sabai” Thai contemporary instrument band. The reception provided an opportunity for ambassadors and heads of international organizations based in Thailand and their spouses not only to experience and learn more about the traditional celebration of Songkran, but also to get together and get acquainted with the Ministry’s executives.
