On 6 November 2018, five Thai police peacekeepers paid a courtesy call on H.E. Mr. Don Pramudwinai, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand, on the occasion of their deployment to the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).
The Minister of Foreign Affairs was pleased with the deployment of Thai police peacekeepers to UNMISS and noted that Thai peacekeepers had long been highly regarded for their professionalism and contribution to their missions. Apart from peacekeeping mandates, Thai peacekeepers also undertake development activities that help foster lasting peace. Their tour of duty will be another form of diplomacy, representing Thailand in enhancing bilateral relations with South Sudan at the local level and reflecting Thailand’s commitment to support the work of the United Nations. In addition, Thailand’s woman peacekeepers demonstrate that women can play an important part in peace processes and be agents of changes. In this regard, the Minister wished the Thai police peacekeepers success with their mandate and future endeavours.
Over the past years, more than 27,000 Thai military and police personnel, men and women, have proudly served in more than 20 peacekeeping and related missions of the United Nations. Thailand currently contributes officers to 3 UN peacekeeping missions (UNAMID in Darfur, UNMOGIP in India/Pakistan, and UNMISS in South Sudan). Thailand is also preparing for the deployment of a Horizontal Military Engineering Company (HMEC) to join UNMISS.
