On 7 May 2026, Ms. Somrudee Poopornanake, Acting Director-General of the Department of European Affairs, attended a reception on the occasion of the first anniversary of the pontificate of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV at Holy Redeemer Church, Bangkok.

Archbishop Peter Wells, Apostolic Nuncio of the Holy See to Thailand, highlighted the long-standing relations spanning more than three centuries between Thailand and the Holy See. He underscored the significant contributions of the Catholic Church to Thai society, particularly in areas of public health, education, social justice, and the promotion of human dignity, as well as its close cooperation with public authorities and people of all faiths to foster harmony and friendship for the common good. He also emphasised the importance of cooperation between religious institutions and the public sector in promoting the well-being of the people, and invited participants to join in prayer for world peace.
