On 24 June 2026, Mr. Chettaphan Maksamphan, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, attended the 23rd ASEAN - Canada Dialogue in Jakarta, Republic of Indonesia.

The Meeting reviewed progress and discussed ways to advance the ASEAN - Canada Strategic Partnership, as well as exchanged views on regional and international issues. They underscored the importance of concluding negotiations on the ASEAN - Canada Free Trade Agreement (ACAFTA) by the end of 2026, strengthening food and energy security, combating transnational crime and online scams, as well as advancing cooperation in digital and emerging technologies. They also discussed preparations for the ASEAN Post-Ministerial Conference (PMC) Session with Canada in July 2026 in Manila, the Philippines, and plans to convene a Special ASEAN - Canada Summit in 2027 to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of ASEAN - Canada relations.

The Deputy Permanent Secretary led the discussion on sustainable development, highlighting three priorities: (1) environmental conservation; (2) the green transition; and (3) disaster preparedness, including through the exchange of best practices, the expansion of cooperation networks, and collaboration between relevant ASEAN and Canadian agencies. He also outlined Thailand’s position on regional and international developments, underscoring the importance of “openness” in four dimensions: (1) open markets; (2) open sea lanes and maritime security; (3) an open, secure, and safe digital space; and (4) open channels of dialogue and diplomacy, which are essential to promoting peace, stability, and shared prosperity.
