On 14 September 2026, H.E. Ms. Arjaree Sriratanaban, Ambassador of Thailand to Papua New Guinea with residence in Canberra, joined H.E. Grand Chief Sir Bob Dadae, Governor-General of Papua New Guinea, in presiding over the Ceremony to open the Thai Orchid Corner at Port Moresby Nature Park to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Thailand-Papua New Guinea Diplomatic Relations this year. Distinguished guests included Mr. Laoni Henao, Honorary-Consul General of Thailand to Papua New Guinea, Ms. Lorna McPherson, Board Chairperson of Port Moresby Nature Park, Mr. Johnpaul Houston, Chief Executive Officer of Port Moresby Nature Park, Mr. Paiboon Wetwattana, President of Wonnapob Co., Ltd., representatives from Port Moresby National Capital District, University of Papua New Guinea, Australian High Commission, as well as members of Thai community, tourists, and media in Papua New Guinea. (Local news coverage can be viewed at https://dg.th/zsua3rox5c) The Thai Orchid Corner at Port Moresby Nature Park is sponsored by the Royal Thai Embassy in cooperation with the Port Moresby Nature Park and with support from the Botanical Garden Organization of Thailand and the Thai Department of Agriculture. The exhibition showcased Thai orchids of over 30 species, including the Thai-Papua New Guinean hybrids specially bred in Thailand to celebrate the historic milestone. The project aimed at increasing awareness of Thailand among Papua New Guineans and promoting ties between Thailand and Papua New Guinea. Orchids are among the most favourite plants for both Thais and Papua New Guineans. Port Moresby Nature Park is one of Papua New Guinea’s main tourist attractions with over 150,000 visitors annually. In her opening remarks, the Ambassador spoke about the objective of the project, emphasized the importance of Thailand-Papua New Guinea relations, and invited Papua New Guinea to consider participating as exhibitor in the International Horticultural Expo 2029 in Nakhon Ratchasima Province or “Korat” in 2029, which Thailand will host. Subsequently, on 15 September 2026, the Ambassador opened the Training Programme on Orchid Breeding and Hybridizing, organized with financial support from the Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA) and technical support from experts from the Botanical Garden Organization of Thailand and the Thai Department of Agriculture. The Training aimed at sharing Thailand’s expertise and experiences on orchid culture with the Port Moresby Nature Park and participants from relevant Papua New Guinea’s academic and vocational institutions as well as to forge a network for further cooperation. Development cooperation formed an important part of Thailand- Papua New Guinea relations. Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA) has supported capacity building and development of human capital through the provision of Master’s degree scholarships and short-term training fellowships to Papua New Guinea. The Embassy of Papau New Guinea in Bangkok was opened for operation in 2025.
