On 29 April 2026, Mrs. Urasa Mongkolnavin, Director-General of the Department of South Asian, Middle East and African Affairs, co-chaired the inauguration ceremony of the Central Asian Studies Center (CASC) at the Institute of Asian Studies, Chulalongkorn University, together with Professor Dr. Wilert Puriwat, President of Chulalongkorn University, and Associate Professor Dr. Pavika Sriratanaban, Director of the Institute of Asian Studies.

The Director-General highlighted the importance of the CASC as a hub for knowledge and as a platform for dialogue exchanges which would lead to deeper mutual understanding between Thailand and the five Central Asian countries (Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and the Republic of Kyrgyz), especially in light of the upcoming 35th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between Thailand and the five Central Asian countries in 2027.

The Institute of Asian Studies also hosted the signing of MOUs between the CASC and prominent Central Asian academic bodies. A panel discussion titled “Diplomatic Perspectives: Thailand-Central Asia Relations in a Changing Eurasia” was conducted by H.E. Mr. Apirat Sugondhabhirom, former Thai Ambassador to the Republic of Turkiye along with the panelists, namely H.E. Mr. Margulan Baimukhan, Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan to Thailand, H.E. Mr. Elchin Bashirov, Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Thailand, as well as Mr. Chakriennorrathip Sevikul, representing the Department of South Asian, Middle East and African Affairs. The event was well-received and attended by academics, university lecturers, and students, along with high-level representatives from relevant agencies and diplomatic missions in Thailand.

The establishment of CASC aims to be the hub of knowledge on Central Asia for both public and private sectors, as well as a strategic mechanism in advancing research, network development, and policymaking related to the region.
