On 12-13 June 2026, H.E. Mrs. Suphanvasa Chotikajan Tang, Ambassador of Thailand to Denmark, together with officials from the Royal Thai Embassy and representatives of the Thailand and Nordic Countries Innovation Unit (TNIU), traveled to Bornholm to attend the Danish People’s Meeting, or Folkemødet 2026. They also met with the local Thai community and met with the Chief Executive Officer of Baltic Energy Island regarding the promotion of cooperation in renewable energy.
The Ambassador participated in discussion activities at Folkemødet, Denmark’s largest and most important annual public debate forum, which had approximately 50,000 attendees from various sectors, including the public and private sectors, diplomatic corps, civil society, and academic institutions. The Ambassador learned firsthand of the varying perspectives and exchanged views on important issues such as international relations, the global economy, innovation, sustainability, and Europe's development direction.
At the event, innovative environmental research was presented. For instance, the Novo Nordisk Foundation CO₂ Research Center presented advancements in carbon capture and storage technologies, as well as the application of biological enzymes in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The Ambassador exchanged views with the research team regarding the role of science, technology, and innovation in supporting the transition to a green economy and explored opportunities to promote knowledge-sharing through the TNIU network in the future.
On 14 June 2026, the Ambassador and delegation visited the Thai community on Bornholm, which numbered approximately 80 people. Most of them were engaged in the service sector, such as Thai restaurants and massage and spa businesses. The delegation inquired about their well-being, listened to their business experiences, and provided consular services and advice. This visit reflected the Embassy’s commitment to looking after the welfare of Thais in Denmark and continuously maintaining close relations with the Thai community.
In addition, on 15 June 2026, the Ambassador met and discussed with Mr. Søren Møller Christensen, Chief Executive Officer of Baltic Energy Island, which was a wind energy project aiming to develop Bornholm into the region's center for renewable energy and green innovation. They received a briefing on the project's vision and development plans and visited the project to renovate the old power plant in Rønne into a future innovation learning center to accommodate research, technological development, and the growth of entrepreneurs in various sectors while also preserving the historic architecture for future generations to admire.
This visit to Bornholm was highly beneficial in learning about Denmark's development direction, which was creative and involved public participation, as well as Bornholm's efforts in setting a proactive strategy to become a regional leader in wind energy. The visit highlights the potential for Thailand and Denmark to strengthen cooperation, particularly in innovation, sustainability, and renewable energy, while fostering tangible collaborative networks between the public, private, and academic sectors of both countries, and sustainably strengthening the connectedness of the Thai community in Denmark.
