On 24 March 2026, Ms. Somrudee Poopornanake, Acting Director-General of the Department of European Affairs, and Mr. Martijn Quinn, Deputy Head of Unit for Regional and Bilateral Environmental Cooperation at the European Commission, co-chaired a consultation on “Thailand - EU Cooperation on the Circular Economy” and “Preparing the Thai Private Sector for the PPWR Regulation.” The meeting aimed to enhance the preparedness of Thai public and private sector stakeholders in responding to the European Union’s circular economy measures.

Both sides exchanged views with the EU on regulatory developments in the circular economy. The Thai side underscored the strong partnership between Thailand and the European Union in advancing sustainable development and the green transition, as well as in fostering new business and industrial opportunities that are environmentally responsible and aligned with circular production models. These efforts are key to strengthening the global competitiveness of Thai enterprises. The Thai side also highlighted key challenges faced by Thai public and private sectors in adapting to the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), particularly in areas such as technical documentation, substances of concern, digital product passports, and the overarching legal framework.

Both sides agreed to further enhance the capacity of Thai public and private sectors to effectively address these challenges, including through technical and policy dialogues, targeted capacity-building initiatives, and collaborative research efforts.
