On 8 December 2025, H.E. Mr. Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Minister of Foreign Affairs, had a discussion with H.E. Mr. Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, on the occasion of his official visit to Thailand.

Both sides discussed ways to further strengthen bilateral relations, including under the Thailand - Africa Initiative, which serves as the principal framework guiding Thailand’s foreign policy toward the African region. Particular emphasis was placed on increasing the frequency of consultative meetings, enhancing trade value, and promoting investment. The Thai side expressed its intention to expand exports of rice and agricultural machinery, while the Nigerian side invited Thai investment in natural gas exploration and production, as well as in the semiconductor industry. The Foreign Minister also proposed areas of agricultural cooperation in which Thailand has expertise and which align with Nigeria’s development needs, as part of development cooperation initiatives. The Thai side sought Nigeria’s support in enhancing engagement with regional and subregional organizations in Africa, such as the African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), of which Nigeria is a member. The Nigerian side also expressed its interest in strengthening interactions between ECOWAS and ASEAN. In addition, they exchanged views on cooperation within various multilateral frameworks, particularly BRICS, in which both Thailand and Nigeria are partner countries.

The official visit to Thailand of the Nigerian Foreign Minister represents an important opportunity for Thailand to further deepen relations and cooperation with Nigeria, both as a friendly nation and as one of Thailand’s key trading partners in Africa, as well as to advance the Thailand - Africa Initiative in a concrete, continuous, and sustainable manner, as fellow Global South countries.
