On 25 March 2026, Mr. Benjamin Sukanjanajtee, Director-General of the Department of Treaties and Legal Affairs, held a substantive discussion with H.E. Mr. Pedro Zwahlen, Ambassador of the Swiss Confederation to Thailand, on strengthening cooperation in international humanitarian law (IHL).

Both sides exchanged views on the upcoming State Expert Meeting on IHL, which will be organised by Switzerland in partnership with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in April 2026. The Thai side considers that the Meeting, which emphasizes the principle of precaution for the protection of civilians in situations of armed conflict, is both timely and appropriate in light of the current global context, where conflicts persist across many regions around the world.

Both sides also discussed their engagement in the “Global Initiative to Galvanise Political Commitment to IHL” since 2025, particularly on Thailand’s success in establishing the National Committee on IHL and the outcomes of its first meeting in 2025, which endorsed the establishment of a subcommittee as a preliminary mechanism to review and update Thailand’s IHL-related legislation, as well as to consider the possibility of accession to additional IHL instruments.
