On 14 August 2025, H.E. Mr. Maris Sangiampongsa, Minister of Foreign Affairs, at the invitation of H.E. Mr. Wang Yi, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, attended an informal consultation "tea chat" among the Foreign Ministers of China, Cambodia, and Thailand, on the sidelines of the 10th Mekong–Lancang Cooperation (MLC) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Anning, Yunnan, China.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed Thailand's appreciation for China’s constructive role in supporting the peaceful resolution of issues between Thailand and Cambodia through bilateral mechanisms, which have continued to make progress, including the special meeting between the leaders of the two countries on 28 July 2025, the Extraordinary Session of the GBC on 7 August 2025, as well as the upcoming RBC meeting.
This informal consultation reflected China’s goodwill in using the opportunity of hosting the MLC Foreign Ministers’ Meeting to allow Thailand and Cambodia to engage in dialogue and foster understanding, thereby creating a positive atmosphere for the peaceful resolution of issues. However, Thailand and Cambodia will need to continue discussions and reach detailed agreements by themselves.
During the consultation, China welcomed the positive progress following the ceasefire agreement and the commitment of both Thailand and Cambodia to strictly observe it. China also welcomed the establishment of the Interim Observer Team (IOT), led by Malaysia’s Defense Attaché, to effectively support the implementation of the ceasefire agreement. Thailand reaffirmed its support for and facilitation of the IOT mission, while Thailand and Cambodia will further discuss details at the upcoming RBC meeting.
Thailand has prioritized and actively promoted urgent demining operations along the border for the safety of the people and as part of the implementation of the ceasefire agreement reached by the GBC. China expressed its readiness to support both sides in this matter. However, it is regrettable that Cambodia has not yet cooperated with Thailand in demining operations along the border, despite the fact that the leaders of both countries had previously agreed to it, citing the unfinished survey and demarcation of the land boundary. Nonetheless, Thailand considers this issue urgent and humanitarian in nature and remains determined to proceed with demining along the border as soon as possible, with the continued support of friendly countries.
