On 10 June 2025, Ms. Prangtip Kanchanahattakij, Deputy Director-General of the Department of International Economic Affairs, co-chaired the Mekong-U.S. Partnership (MUSP) Senior Officials’ Meeting with Mr. Sean O’Neill, Senior Bureau Official, Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, U.S. Department of State, in Penang, Malaysia. Senior officials from all Mekong countries also participated in the meeting.

 
The meeting reaffirmed the geo-strategic, geo-political, and geo-economic significance of the Mekong subregion. It also underscored a shared commitment to promoting cooperation between the Mekong countries and the United States under the MUSP framework, with the aim of advancing sustainable development in the subregion, enhancing mutual benefits for the people of the Mekong and the United States, and addressing the subregion’s key challenges. Thailand emphasized on the importance of cooperation in addressing shared challenges, including: (1) water resources management, (2) mitigating haze and transboundary pollution, (3) combatting transboundary crime, and (4) supporting human resource development.

 
The meeting also served as a valuable opportunity for MUSP member countries to discuss and exchange views on strengthening cooperation in various projects and activities under the MUSP Action Plan 2024–2026, which the United States can continue to play an important role in supporting the development and prosperity of the Mekong subregion across various sectors.
