On 14 January 2026, H.E. Mr. Psusist Wongsurawat, Consul-General of Thailand in Penang, paid a courtesy call on Tuan Yang Terutama Tun Dato' Seri Utama Haji Ramli Ngah Talib, Governor (Yang di-Pertua Negeri) of Penang, at Seri Mutiara, the official residence of the Governor of Penang. The meeting was also attended by Ms. Suratchaya Palawongse, Deputy Consul-General, Mr. Kantapon Sangkhapreecha, Consul, and Mrs. Maneerat Jattawapakdee, Vice-Consul.
Both sides discussed ways to strengthen border trade, especially on agricultural and industrial products exported from Thailand to Malaysia, Thai investments in Malaysia and ways to boost tourisms between Penang and Thailand. The Consul-General also informed the Governor of the overseas election and referendum to be held at the Royal Thai Consulate-General on 24-25 January 2026. Furthermore, the Consul-General expressed his gratitude for the assistance of all sectors in Penang rendered to the victims of flood catastrophe in Hat Yai.
Penang is one of the four states of Malaysia without hereditary monarchy as the Head of State, but instead, Penang, has a Governor appointed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. The Governor as the Head of State, mainly performs ceremonial duties and serves a 4-year term. Tuan Yang Terutama Tun Dato' Seri Utama Haji Ramli Ngah Talib, the current Governor of Penang, started his term on 1 May 2025.
