On 17 March 2026, Mr. Psusist Wongsurawat, Consul-General of Thailand in Penang, travelled to Hat Yai District, Songkhla Province, to meet with representatives from the private sector and tourism operators. The purpose was to observe the atmosphere and assess the readiness of Hat Yai's tourism sector to welcome Malaysian tourists following the recovery from the major floods in late November 2025.
On this occasion, the Consul-General visited the Golden Crown Grand Hotel, explored the shopping atmosphere at Kim Yong Market, met with the owner of the "Thanyada" souvenir shop, a popular shop among Malaysian tourists, and paid respects at the Thong Sia Siang Thung Shrine, where he met and held discussions with the executives of the Thong Sia Siang Thung Foundation. The event was attended by Mr. Siwat Suwanwong, President of the Tourism Council of Songkhla; Mr. Sompol Cheewattanapong, Advisor to the Tourism Council of Songkhla; Mr. Suwat Phetwarothai, Director of Tourism and Hospitality Business Driving Department, Songkhla Chamber of Commerce; and Dr. Sitthipong Sitthiphataraprabha, President of the Hat Yai Songkhla Hotels Association; Ms. Aida Oujeh, President of the Association of Tourism Trade Halal Thai-ASEAN, and Ms. Jiralak Padungpakdeewong, President of the Thai Travel Agents Association, jointly led a tour and provided information to reassure tourists that Hat Yai is Back!
