Consul-General of Thailand in Penang welcomed Commander of the Naval Cadet Training Squadron to Penang

H.E. Mr. Psusist Wongsurawat, Consul-General of Thailand in Penang, welcomed Rear Admiral Chalit Buathong, Commander of the Naval Cadet Training, and the delegation of the Royal Thai Naval Academy Year 1-3 on the occasion of training exercise on board His Thai Majesty’s Ship (HTMS) Angthong and HTMS Prachuap Khiri Khan, which has made a port call at the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal, Penang, between 1-4 April 2026.
On this occasion, the Consul-General of Thailand in Penang along with Captain Jirapong Apichatwong, Naval Attaché to Malaysia, and Mr. Kantapon Sangkhapreecha, Consul, attended the Welcome Ceremony of squadron at the Swettenham Peir Cruise Terminal on 1 April 2026. In the evening, Rear Admiral Chalit Buathong, Commandant of the Naval Cadet Training Squadron and the delegation from the naval cadet training squadron paid a courtesy call on the Consul-General of Thailand in Penang. On this occasion, the Consul-General of Thailand hosted a dinner in honour of Rear Admiral Chalit Buathong and the delegation at the Consul-General’s residence.
In the evening of 2 April 2026, the Consul-General of Thailand in Penang, together with First Admiral Ahmad Sapuan Fathi bin Haji MuhammadDenih Hendrata, Deputy Commander of the Western Fleet of the Royal Malaysian Navy, as guests of honour, joined a reception held on board HTMS Angthong. The event was attended by more than 100 people, which were members of the Royal Malaysian Navy, relevant Malaysian authorities, including officers of the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Penang and their family members.
On 4 April 2026, the Consul-General of Thailand in Penang, together with Captain Jirapong Apichatwong, Naval Attaché to Malaysia, Mr. Kantapon Sangkhapreecha, Consul, and Commander So Lea Kun, Commander of the Volunteer Naval Reserve Unit, Penang, as the representative of the Royal Malaysian Navy, attended a farewell ceremony of the training squadron at the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal before heading towards Singapore for the next destination.
This port visit marks the first-time port call of the Royal Thai Naval Cadet Training Squadron to Penang in 12 years. On this Occasion, the Royal Thai Navy also organised an Open Ship Day for the public to visit both ships on 2 April 2026, which boosts the relations between both government-to-government and people-to-people levels, as well as strengthens military and maritime security cooperation between Thailand and Malaysia and also demonstrates Thailand’s maritime capabilities.
