On 19 April 2026, Mr. Psusist Wongsurawat, Consul-General of Thailand in Penang, and Dato’ Cheok Lay Leng, General Manager of Penang Hill Corporation, jointly presided over the opening ceremony of the Songkran Celebration at Penang Hill. The Royal Thai Consulate-General in Penang and Penang Hill Corporation had jointly organized this activity on Penang Hill for the first time. The event featured traditional “4 regions” dance performances by a troupe from Songkhla Rajabhat University, a demonstration of the “Wai Kru Muay Thai” and Muay Thai techniques by boxers from Nicha Muay Thai Gym, as well as Songkran folk dances reflecting the unique and diverse cultural heritage of Thailand.
This event attracted a large number of tourists and received very positive feedback. It marks another success in promoting Thai arts and culture abroad, as well as enhancing mutual understanding between the people of the two countries.
Penang Hill is a landmark of Penang and one of the most popular tourist destinations, attracting thousands of visitors daily. Besides being a tourist attraction, Penang Hill has also played a continuous role in promoting regional cultural exchange. Penang Hill has been designated a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO since 2021.
