On 24 June 2023, the Royal Thai Embassy in Oslo co-hosted with the Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC) in organizing the Thai cooking demonstration under the theme of “Amazing Journey of Thai Taste in Norwegian Seafood”. The event was opened by H.E. Ms. Vimolbajra Ruksakiati, Ambassador of Thailand to Norway, together with Mr. Christian Chramer, CEO of NSC and Mr. Asbjørn Warvik Rørtveit, Director South East Asia, NSC Office in Bangkok. Invited guests include Mr. Tage Pettersen, Member of Storting, Østfold, and the Standing Committee on family and cultural affairs, Ambassadors and members of diplomatic corps in Oslo, namely, Canada Mexico, Japan, Colombia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Morocco, Kazakhstan, Bulgaria, Indonesia, Peru and USA, Friends of Thailand in Norway, representatives from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Bloggers from Travel, Food and Life Style magazines, namely “Reise Lykke”, “Helleskitchen” and “Vegabond Reiselyst” as well as Thai community in Norway.

The idea of “Amazing Journey of Thai Taste in Norwegian Seafood” came from the meeting between Ambassador Vimolbajra and Mr. Asbjørn Warvik Rørtveit, NSC Director South East Asia, at a dinner on 27 September 2022 with Khun Urassaya Sperbund or “Khun Yaya” a Thai-Norwegian actress, who took part as a good will Ambassador in the NSC’s “Story from the North” Project, in order to promote Norwegian seafood.

As Thailand is the largest importer of Norwegian seafood in South East Asia, especially Norwegian salmon and trout which Thailand imported about 20,000 tons last year and that the NSC’s South East Asia office is situated in Bangkok, Ambassador Vimolbajra places high importance in the strengthening of cooperation between the Embassy and NSC. In May 2023, Ambassador Vimolbajra met with Mr. Christian Chramer, CEO of NSC at the NSC’s Headquarter in Tromsø. NSC has also kindly arranged Ambassador Vimolbajra to pay a study visit at SalMar’s salmon offshore farm and factory in order to learn about sustainable fisheries in Norway. Thailand shares the Norwegian concept of “we share” through a common goal in being a “Thai Healthy Kitchen of the World”.

At the “Amazing Journey of Thai Taste in Norwegian Seafood” Chef Chanyuth Chitprakorb or Chef Nuk, a Thai Chef from Bergen and his Thai culinary team from Bergen and Oslo demonstrated 4 Thai fusion dishes by using Norwegian seafood, namely, Tom Yum Goong Butter Cake with Tom Yum flavour and Norwegian Lobster, King Crab Tart with coconut milk and fermented soybeans, Strawberry Salmon roll with Thai Herbs and Pan seared Halibut with Tumeric cream sauce. Guests also took part in the cooking demonstration, namely H.E. Mrs. Vera Shatilova-Micarova, Ambassador of Bulgaria to Norway, Ms. Elisabeth Drevvatne, CEO NSC Mr. Christian Chramer, and Mr. Asbjørn Warvik Rørtveit, NSC Director South East Asia, also Chef Terje Ommundsen, owner of the Michelin-listed Thai Restaurant “Plah” and “Ahaan” in Oslo. “Amazing Journey of Thai Taste in Norwegian Seafood” enhances closer bilateral relations between Thailand Norway especial people-to-people connection by using the combination of unique Thai food with Norwegian seafood which brings together a delightful fusion. The event also plays an important role in promoting economic cooperation between Thailand and Norway through a promotion of Norwegian seafood and Thai food. The future conclusion of the Free Trade Agreement negotiation between Thailand and European Free Trade Association or EFTA will help reduce tax and other trade barriers which will benefit the import-export of Norwegian seafood and other goods as well as to expand Thai products in Norwegian market.

The Royal Thai Embassy in Oslo wishes to express our sincere appreciation to our Friends of Thailand in Norway, the Diplomatic Corps and Thai community in Norway for joining us in the “Amazing Journey of Thai Taste in Norwegian Seafood”. We are touched by your kind words of compliments and encouragement given to Chef Nuk and his Thai culinary team in Norway for their creative performance and their strong dedication in presenting unique flavors of Thai food in Norway and globally. This event is also to promote and empower Thai community in Norway who have vast potentials and skills.

On a more personal note, the “Amazing Journey of Thai Taste in Norwegian Seafood” was held as a tribute in loving memory of Mrs. Voravalla Ruksakiati, beloved mother of Ambassador Vimolbajra, who was the VVIP guest attending “Amazing Thai Fine Dining in Oslo” held last June.
