1. On 29 December 2025, a landmine clearance team from the 8th Engineer Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division, stepped on an anti-personnel landmine laid by the Cambodian side in the Khao Satthasom area, Si Sa Ket province, while conducting a mission to enhance security in the area. As a result, one Thai soldier sustained permanent disability.
2. A preliminary assessment indicates that a significant number of newly-laid landmines are still present in the area, particularly where it came under Thai control prior to the signing of the Joint Statement concerning the ceasefire at the Special Meeting of the General Border Committee (GBC) between Thailand and Cambodia on 27 December 2025. The Thai side is currently conducting a comprehensive investigation and collecting evidence of this latest landmine incident, in order to ascertain the facts in accordance with the operational framework of the Joint Statement.
3. Thailand expresses its sympathy to the injured soldier and his family and condemns Cambodia’s continued use of anti-personnel landmines, which constitutes, once again, a violation of Thailand’s sovereignty and territorial integrity as well as obligations under the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention (Ottawa Convention) to which Cambodia is a State Party.
4. In this regard, Thailand is sending a letter of protest to Cambodia and will continue to pursue this matter to the fullest extent within the framework of the Ottawa Convention. Thailand calls upon Cambodia to cooperate in joint humanitarian demining efforts along the border in good faith. This is one of the key elements of the Joint Statement of the GBC meeting and represents a biding obligation upon both parties.
