The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defence will be co-hosting the 2nd Thailand-U.S. Strategic and Defense Dialogue and related meetings during 28-29 February 2024. The 9th Thailand-U.S. Strategic Dialogue between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the U.S. Department of State and the 8th Defense Strategic Talks between the Ministry of Defence and the U.S. Department of Defense will be held on 28 February 2024. This will be followed by the  2nd Thailand-U.S. Strategic and Defense Dialogue or 2+2  on 29 February 2024, co-chaired by Mrs. Eksiri Pintaruchi, Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, and General Sanitchanog Sangkachantra, Permanent Secretary for Defence, together with U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel J. Kritenbrink, and Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Indo-Pacific Security Affairs Jedidiah P. Royal.

The meetings are key mechanisms for steering and enhancing the alliance and strategic partnership between Thailand and the U.S., particularly following the meeting between the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand and the U.S. Secretary of State on 12 February 2024 during the official visit to Washington of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs. These meetings are to move forward the multi-dimensional cooperation, both at bilateral and regional levels as stated in the Thailand-U.S. Communiqué on Strategic Alliance and Partnership, as well as cooperation in areas of shared priorities. The meetings will also provide an opportunity for both sides to exchange strategic perspectives on the global and regional security landscape and important developments, as well as to advance further collaboration.

The U.S. is Thailand’s long-standing friend and ally, as Thailand is the first country in Asia that signed the Treaty of Amity and Commerce with the U.S. in 1833. Last year both sides celebrated the occasion of the 190th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. The inaugural 2+2 meeting was hosted by the U.S. in Washington, D.C. in May 2022.
