Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn will graciously attend the Eleventh “Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn” Lecture on International Humanitarian Law (IHL) on Monday 18 August 2025, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand. The Lecture Series, co-hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Thai Red Cross Society, will this year be honoured by the presence of Ms. Mirjana Spoljaric Egger, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), who will deliver a lecture on the topic “Upholding Humanity in Contemporary Warfare.”
Ms. Spoljaric has served as President of the ICRC since October 2022. Prior to assuming the Presidency, she was United Nations Assistant Secretary-General, Assistant Administrator of the UN Development Programme (UNDP), and its Director of the Regional Bureau for Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) since August 2018. She has extensive experiences in multilateral diplomacy, and during her office as Ambassador and Head of the United Nations and International Organisations Division, she also played a significant role in shaping coherent Switzerland’s policies and priorities within the UN organs, as well as in international humanitarian fora.
The Lecture, held every two years since 2003, aims to disseminate knowledge on IHL, including rules governing and limitations on the use of force in armed conflict, emphasizing the protection of those involved and affected by hostilities, as well as highlights the role and mission of International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. Each edition invites distinguished experts in the field to deliver the lecture and share their perspectives on key humanitarian issues of current interest, both in the Thai and international contexts.
The 11th Lecture is expected to draw no fewer than 300 participants, including representatives from relevant government agencies and experts involved in Thailand’s humanitarian efforts, members of the diplomatic corps, senior military and police officers, representatives of international organisations, academic institutions, scholars, and the media. They will have the opportunity to hear Ms. Spoljaric’s insights from her challenging humanitarian work, which will serve as an inspiration for Thailand to continue actively promoting compliance with IHL.
