On 26 September 2025, H.E. Mr. Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Minister of Foreign Affairs, had a bilateral meeting with H.E. Mr. Iwaya Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80) in New York City.
Both sides were pleased with the longstanding friendship and shared a desire to see stronger economic cooperation between the two countries through existing mechanisms such as the High-Level Joint Commission (HLJC). Japan reaffirmed support for Thailand’s accession to the OECD and will continue to assist in enhancing Thailand’s standards and economic competitiveness for the modern economy.
The Thai Foreign Minister briefed his Japanese counterpart about the latest development relating to the border situation between Thailand and Cambodia, and reaffirmed Thailand’s desire for a peaceful resolution of the current situation. He appreciated the active role of Japan, as President of the 22nd Meeting of States Parties of the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention (Ottawa Convention), in encouraging Cambodia to cooperate with Thailand on demining in a concrete manner. Such cooperation would be vital for rebuilding trust and cooperation between the two countries.
