On 25 August 2025, H.E. Mr. Russ Jalichandra, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, had a discussion with the U.S. Congressional Delegation, comprising Congresswoman Beth Van Duyne (R-Texas), Congresswoman Terri Sewell (D-Alabama), Congressman Richard McCormick (R-Georgia), and Congressman Suhas Subramanyam (D-Virginia), as well as Vice President of the U.S. - Asia Institute Tami Overby, during their visit to Thailand at the invitation of the Ministry by the Royal Thai Embassy in Washington, D.C. Congressmen McCormick and Subramanyam are also members of the U.S. - Thai Alliance Caucus at the U.S. Congress.

Both sides reiterated the importance attached to the Thailand - U.S. alliance and strategic partnership and discussed ways to further strengthen the longstanding relations between the two countries of almost 200 years, encompassing multifaceted cooperation. A key area of discussion was security cooperation, particularly efforts to combat online scams, which have posed shared challenges, causing significant losses to both Thai and American citizens. The Vice Minister highlighted Thailand’s efforts to strengthen cooperation in combating transnational crime, particularly online scams and the problem of scam centers located in Cambodia.

In the area of economic cooperation, both sides exchanged views on U.S. trade policies particularly with regard to reciprocal tariffs. The U.S. delegation expressed interest in learning about Thailand’s investment promotion policies and viewed Thailand as having the potential to serve as a U.S. investment hub in the region. Both sides also discussed Thailand - U.S. cooperation at the regional and sub-regional levels, which has long been in the common interest of both countries, benefitting both peoples and contributing to peace, security, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region. The Thai side reaffirmed its readiness to continue working closely with the U.S. in this regard.

In addition, both sides also discussed the situation between Thailand and Cambodia, whereby the Vice Minister shared factual information on recent developments, including actions by Cambodia that constitute violations of Thailand’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and international law, and risk undermining ASEAN unity. The Thai side reiterated that Thailand does not wish to see the situation escalate as it would not benefit anyone and remains committed to resolving the matter peacefully through existing bilateral mechanisms. The Thai side will continue to address the issue in good faith and asked the U.S., as a long-standing ally, to encourage Cambodia to honor the ceasefire and work with Thailand to resolve the issue peacefully.
