Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand and U.S. Deputy Secretary of State reaffirmed the enduring Thailand-U.S. Alliance and advocated enhanced bilateral engagement, including cooperation on public health and economic recovery from the spread of COVID-19, for common regional security and prosperity, on her official visit to Thailand.

On 2 June 2021, H.E. Mr. Don Pramudwinai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand, was paid a courtesy call by Hon. Ms. Wendy Sherman, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, after a courtesy call on H.E. General Prayut Chan-o-cha, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand, at the Government House.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State reaffirmed strong commitment to the long-standing alliance and strategic partnership between Thailand and the U.S. Both sides agreed to reinvigorate the engagement at the bilateral and regional levels and discussed ways to enhance cooperation on issues of shared priorities of both governments.

Both sides agreed on the importance of public health cooperation and COVID-19 responses. The U.S. recognised Thailand’s and global needs for increased access to vaccines and increased vaccine production. They also discussed promoting cooperation for economic recovery, as well as climate change and sustainable development, as prioritised by both governments, including the Royal Thai Government’s policy on Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) Economy, particularly in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC).

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State exchanged views on the current regional strategic landscape and key regional developments, including the situation in Myanmar. The U.S. side took note of Thailand’s constructive role in ASEAN-led frameworks and reaffirmed its support for ASEAN efforts. Both sides also explored ways to further enhance cooperation at the regional and sub-regional levels.

The official visit of the U.S. Delegation to Thailand, led by Deputy Secretary of State Sherman, during 1-2 June 2021 underscores the importance of the enduring Thailand – U.S. alliance, which has gone from strength to strength despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
