Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand engages key States Parties and other Stakeholders supporting the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention (Ottawa Convention)

On 27 August 2025, H.E. Mr. Maris Sangiampongsa, Minister of Foreign Affairs met with key States Parties and other stakeholders that support respect for and compliance with the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention (Ottawa Convention) at United Nations Headquarters in Geneva.

The Foreign Minister underscored that Thailand is a peace loving country and strong advocate for humanitarian disarmament and commitment to implementing its obligations under the Ottawa Convention, demonstrated in its active role in demining and supporting mine victims in their recovery. The Foreign Minister also updated the meeting on the violation of the Ottawa Convention through the discovery of newly laid landmines on Thai territory by Cambodia, which injured and disabled numerous Thai soldiers.

In this connection, the meeting was briefed on Thailand’s principled actions in pursuing the matter under the Ottawa Convention, reiterating Thailand’s call on the international community to do what as much as possible to bring Cambodia back to full compliance with the Convention. While Thailand will also continue to pursue the matter in existing bilateral mechanisms, the Foreign Minister announced Thailand’s decision to join the United Nations Secretary-General’s Global Advocacy Campaign on Humanitarian Disarmament and Mine Action, reflecting Thailand’s long-standing commitment not only to the Ottawa Convention but to humanitarian disarmament and international humanitarian law.
