On 30 May 2023, Ms. Usana Berananda, Director-General of the Department of ASEAN Affairs, participated in the 20th ASEAN-Canada Dialogue in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. On this occassion, Thailand encouraged Canada to enhance its constructive role in the region and strengthen cooperation with ASEAN, particularly in the areas of education, human capital development, people-to-people connectivity, tourism, and sports.

The Meeting reiterated the shared goal of ASEAN and Canada in maintaining regional peace and stability and achieving sustainable economic recovery. The Meeting also reaffirmed the commitment to establishing an ASEAN-Canada Strategic Partnership and accelerating the ASEAN-Canada FTA negotiations.

In addition, the Meeting discussed concrete ways to deepen cooperation on political-security, trade and investment, climate action, food and energy security, disaster management, and women empowerment, as well as the preparations for the ASEAN-Canada Summit in September 2023 in Jakarta, to officially launch the establishment of the ASEAN-Canada Strategic Partnership.
