On 12 June 2026, H.E. Mr. Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, met with H.E. Mr. Motegi Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Headquarters in Tokyo.
During the discussion, both sides underlined the longstanding friendship between the two countries, while agreeing on the importance of further advancing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) to respond to evolving global challenges. In particular, there should be a focus on cultivating “new engines of growth” through co-creation in strategic areas, including clean energy and green transition, data centres and digitalisation, transport infrastructure, food security, science and technology, and pharmaceuticals and medical technologies. DPM Sihasak also underscored the importance of reinvigorating cooperation in security, supply chain resilience, and people-to-people exchanges, including through high-level exchanges, in the lead-up to the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Japan in 2027.
DPM Sihasak expressed support for Japan’s Updated Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP), noting its alignment with Thailand’s commitment to upholding a rules-based international order, as well as with ASEAN’s ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP), which promotes openness and mutual trust, with ASEAN centrality at its core. The Japanese side commended and supported Thailand’s efforts towards OECD accession by 2028. Both sides also agreed to foster a conducive business environment to further enhance bilateral trade and investment.
In addition, both sides exchanged views on regional issues, including the Thailand–Cambodia border situation, the situations in Myanmar, the Middle East and the South China Sea. The Deputy Prime Minister encouraged Japan to work closely with Thailand in contributing to peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.
