Summary of Press Briefing
on the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly

By the Director-General of the Department of Information and MFA Spokesperson

on 26 September 2025 at the UNHQ in New York

  • On 26 September 2025, the second day of our special press conference continues to follow up on the outcomes and discussions of the high-level meeting of the 80th United Nations General Assembly. In sum, the three key missions for the Thai delegation today included:
    • 1) bilateral meeting with high-level representatives
    • 2) annually scheduled activity with the U.S. private sector
    • 3) The four-party consultation between the U.S., Malaysia, Thailand and Cambodia
  • For the first mission, H.E. Mr. Sihasak Phuangketkaew, Minister of Foreign Affairs, met with high-level representatives of various member states who play a key role impacting developments on particular issues and who can be responsive to Thailand’s interests in managing the current border tensions between Thailand and Cambodia.
    • The Thai Foreign Minister met with the Japanese Foreign Minister, in his capacity as Chair of the Ottawa Convention. During this meeting, the Thai Foreign Minister reaffirmed Thailand’s commitment to continue proceeding with the mechanism of the Compliance Committee (OCC) to persuade Cambodia to cease violations of the Convention and resume joint humanitarian demining, as agreed upon most recently at the GBC meeting;
    • In addition, the Thai Foreign Minister met with the Russian Foreign Minister, who will serve as UNSC President for October 2025, to reaffirm Thailand’s commitment to a peaceful resolution of the tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border while both sides, Thailand and Russia, support existing bilateral mechanisms to resolve the issues.
    • Regarding meetings with high-ranking UN representatives, the Thai Foreign Minister met with the UN Secretary-General, the President of the General Assembly, and the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative on Myanmar to underline Thailand’s adherence to the UN Charter and peaceful approaches to resolving differences. Regarding the situation in Myanmar, they discussed the elections and efforts to enhance the participation of various groups in society, towards sustainable peace and stability and with the support of ASEAN and other countries in the region.
  • In the second mission, the Thai Foreign Minister led the Thai delegation to a reception with the U.S. - ASEAN Business Council and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. This provided an opportunity to introduce the new government, discuss investment opportunities and expand trade cooperation with the U.S. within the context of geopolitical competition and common challenges, particularly from the U.S. reciprocal tariff measures.
  • The third point, following the attendance of the U.S. at the Putrajaya meeting that led to the Thai - Cambodian ceasefire agreement, the Foreign Minister participated in four-party consultations between the U.S., Malaysia, Thailand and Cambodia. This was the U.S. President's initiative aimed to advance and materialize outcomes from the Putrajaya and the GBC meeting. This effort, if productive, would be a first important step in building trust between the two countries.
