During 26-28 March 2013, Thailand dispatched livestock experts to help Myanmar in buffalo development in Labutta, Ayeyarwaddy Region.
The Thai experts from the Department of Livestock Development, visited the Labutta Buffalo Development Centre, established under the support of the Thai Government in the aftermath of Cyclone Nargis, when most buffaloes were cleared away in the natural disaster in 2008.
The Thai experts worked closely with Myanmar veterinarians from the Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department on the demonstration farm. Apart from transfering technology in buffalo rearing, such as artificial insemination to increase the number of livestock for farmers, production of home-made fortified nutrients, and planting of fast-growing grass to ensure sufficient food for buffaloes in the dry season, the Thai experts also provided vaccines and nutrients for buffaloes to improve their health for artificial insemination.
Buffaloes are abundant in the Delta Area and become a way of life of farmers in Ayeyarwaddy Region, where man and animal work on rice paddies.
