Royal Thai Embassy visited Thai workforce who help building Sri Lanka’s Outer Circular Expressway

            On 11th October 2013, Royal Thai Embassy’s staffs along with 2 student trainees from Chulalongkorn University,Thailand, visited the construction site outer circular highway on the outskirt of Colombo, Sri Lanka’s biggest city, in the purpose of surveying the well-being of Thai workers in the site. The project belongs to a Japanese company called Taisei who later has hired a Thai Construction Company called Noppawong, due to the company’s, efficiency and the past well-known construction.

            The purpose of this project is to build a highway connecting the Airport Expressway with the Southern Expressway to Galle, in accordance with an increasing number of foreign tourists and internationally competitive economic in recent years.
In such a regard, Sri Lanka government was given a loan from (Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The whole project is estimated to be finish in 2015.

            Around 20 Thai workers at the site, which mostly come from Northeastern region of Thailand, were satisfied with the job as they were taken care of very well by the employers. Some of them have been here for more than 5 years and some have married with the locals. This is because the employer provides meals and necessary welfare for them. Also, there is a small shop at the working site, where the workers can buy food or drink conveniently.

            During the meeting, the Royal Thai Embassy informed the workforce about the upcoming events for Thai people in Sri Lanka such as registration for the senator election in 2014, the Celebration of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s 86th Birthday Anniversary and Thai National Day on 5 December 2013 and alms giving to the monks on Macha Puja Day (Navam Poya) in 2014.
