At 13:00 hrs. Mr. Tharit Pengdit, Director-General, the Department of Special Investigations, briefed the press on the outcome of the meeting of the Center For Maintaining Peace and Order (CMPO) earlier in the day, gist as follows:
First, following the attempt to initiate negotiations with Mr. Suthep Thaugsuban, Secretary-General of the People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) to not obstruct the election on 2 February, the CMPO was informed that Mr. Suthep refused to enter into any negotiation. However, attempts to negotiate with the PDRC would continue.
Second, the CMPO encouraged the public to exercise their right to vote. Units of police and military personnel would be deployed at polling stations to ensure security. Mobile rapid-response units would also be on standby. The CMPO warned protesters not to obstruct the election as doing so would be unlawful and carry penalties. Police officers will be equipped with camera devices to record any violations. For traffic and security-related information, the public may call 1599 or 1197.
Third, from 3 February, the functions of government agencies would be gradually restored to provide public services. Security personnel would be deployed at several venues.
Fourth, people affected by the demonstrations had filed complaints and requests to police stations and the Crime Suppression Division. The CMPO would take immediate action in response. The CMPO also appreciated any form of support from the private sector for those affected.
Fifth, the CMPO through the Royal Thai Police and Department of Special Investigations, had collected more evidence and requested the Criminal Court to issue arrest warrants for 19 protest leaders on 30 January. The request is under the consideration of the Court.
