Thai Cultural Performances in Mexico

                On the occasion of the 40th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Diplomatic Relations between Thailand and Mexico in 2015, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand through the Royal Thai Embassy in Mexico together with the Ministry of Culture of Thailand co-organized a Thai art and cultural event in Mexico entitled “El Encanto de Tailandia (En Celebración del 40° Aniversario de Relaciones Diplomáticas entre Tailandia y México)” in Mexico City during 11 - 12 July 2015.  Mr. Suvat Chirapant, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs led a cultural troupe consisting of Thai traditional and classical dancers and musicians from the Department of Fine Arts as well as demonstrators of Thai handicrafts, such as Fruit and Vegetable Carving, Bor Sang Umbrella Painting, Traditional Puppetry Making and Ceramic Producing to showcase at the event.  The performances were very successful and warmly received by the Mexican public.  The number of words of appreciation and compliments were posted on the Embassy’s facebook.

                In this connection, the following activities were held during the visit.

1) Thai cultural performances were staged at the Xola Julio Prieto Theatre on 11 July 2015.  The audience of approximately 500 persons expressed deep appreciation to the uniqueness of Thai dances and meticulous costumes.  Afterwards, a dinner reception was held, which was attended by 100 VIP guests, among them were the Deputy Director-General of Protocol Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, high-rank officers of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI); the Government party, representatives from the External Relations (Asia Pacific) Committee of the Senate, executives from several universities and academicians, and local media such as Forbes Mexico.

2) Thai classical and traditional performances and handicraft demonstration were held at the National Centre of Arts (CENART) on 12 July 2015.  This event has drawn much attention of the general public, approximately 3,000 persons.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    The event “El Encanto de Tailandia” is one of the Thai Cultural Roadshow projects, which was co-hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Culture, with an  aim to introduce Thainess and promote the country’s good image to the world, as well as  to boost Thailand’s tourism through several activities such as photo exhibition and DVD presentation during the intermission of the show.  The Embassy also invited Thai Community in Mexico to participate in the said event by setting up kiosks for Thai food and souvenirs as well as traditional Thai massage at the event.                                                                     

               In a broader context, the aforesaid event has been implemented in line with Thailand’s cultural diplomacy policy that aims to strengthen relationship and enhance better understanding between Thailand and foreign countries as well as among their peoples.
